Celeb Trainer Alex Isaly Talks KettleWorX, Motivation and How to Use Kettlebells!

POSTED BY: Alex Isaly in BLOG

A few months ago, I got to demo a super cool new group exercise classes that uses kettlebells for a crazy good full-body workout: KettleWorX. So when I heard that KettleWorX was coming out with an at-home workout program and that we could pick the brain of Lead Trainer Alex Isaly on it and more, well, of course we had to chat him up for Fit Bottomed Dudes’ Week! If you’ve been wanting to try kettlebells (and you should, they’re crazy awesome to work out with!) or are looking to do more with kettlebells at home, read on!

What makes KettleWorX 8 Week Rapid Evolution such a great workout? KettleWorX is all about fast, fun and effective workouts leading to a total body transformation. Fast … each workout is only 20 minutes long (with the option of doing bonus 10 minute Supercharge workouts). Fun … you can never get bored with the workouts. Each week you will experience a whole new workout. Effective … with KettleWorX you will be performing functional exercises, working in three-dimensions, engaging more muscles and turning your body into a fat-burning machine.

How is the program different than other workout systems on the market? KettleWorX is not your traditional kettlebell workout. You will perform a series of kettlebell exercises to increase strength coupled with plyometric movements for improving speed and agility. This fitness formula is guaranteed to increase your heart rate and burn some serious calories.

Working out with kettlebells definitely has a technique element to it. How does this system allow people to safely use kettlebells at home with proper form? KettleWorX is designed so that anyBODY can do it. Kettlebell training is stereotypically known to be performed by elite athletes. What makes this program possible for everybody is that you don’t need really heavy kettlebells to get results AND in each workout there is someone doing a modified version of the move for those who are new to kettlebell training. We at KettleWorX have also included a breakdown and description of proper form and technique in the introduction DVD for several exercises performed in the workouts.

Any top tips you can share for working out with kettlebells, especially for newbies? I think the No. 1 tip for a newbie to the program is to err on the side of light when it comes to choosing your kettlebell when starting the program. It’s important to get familiar and comfortable using a kettlebell because you’ll experience a workout that’s like no other using traditional weight-training tools (i.e., dumbbells).

Obviously getting fit is about more than just workouts; it’s about nutrition, too! What are a few of your favorite pre- and post-workout snacks and recommendations? Without following a proper nutrition program you are not setting yourself up for success. What you eat before and after your workout is just important as your other meals during the day. I would suggest eating a light meal at least one hour before your workout. You can keep it simple, but make sure you are eating a blend of proteins, carbs and fat. I don’t recommend working out on an empty stomach. Food is fuel. If your “tank” is empty you won’t have the energy to get through the workout. Following a workout, you have about an hour window to replace the lost nutrients. I am a big fan of drinking a post-workout protein shake to replenish those nutrients. Post-workout nutrition is essential for a quicker recovery.

You’ve worked with a lot of celebs in your career. Who has been one of the most fun to work with? (And, we’d love to know what you helped Andre Agassi with!) Everyone I have worked with is different in so many ways. I have not only trained but consulted with them, too. I don’t think I could narrow it down to one person whom I had the most fun with. Everyone is great. The one consistent thread with all of them is seeing their passion in what they do. I believe they have actually inspired me more than I have helped them.

One of the many golden nuggets that I took from working with Andre that stands out the most is when he was talking about his two kids whose favorite sports are not tennis. Andre said, “It’s not about making your kids do what you want them to do, but to let them make their own decisions, then go along that journey with them.” As a father of two beautiful young girls, that was so profound to me. As a parent we always want the best for our kids, but think it’s our responsibility to make those choices for them. Sometimes you just have to sit back and watch it happen.

What are a few ways that you stay motivated to keep up with your own personal workouts and healthy meals? I am a big believer in practicing what you preach. I want to be a good example to the people I train and coach. They hold me accountable just as much as I hold them. To me, it’s all about being the trenches with them. You gotta walk the walk and talk the talk.

Any specific fitness tips you can give the dudes — and the ladies — reading? Life is a marathon not a sprint. That’s the same mentality you should have when it comes to training and setting yourself up for “physical” success. Everyone these days are looking for the secret sauce on quickly losing weight or increasing his or her fitness level long term. It’s all about having the mental endurance to stay committed to yourself and the results will follow. So many people don’t have the mental stamina to stay with it. If they don’t see or feel significant results right away, they start looking for something better. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Anything else you’d like to share? I am excited to share the new and improved KettleWorX 8 Week Rapid Evolution program with the world in 2014. We have received so much positive feedback from the public already about the new program. I truly believe many lives will be changed this year through KettleWorX, and I feel so blessed and excited to be a part of that transformation.
