Advice | Protein Supplements

POSTED BY: Alex Isaly in BLOG

Q. There are a lot of protein supplements on the market right now... do you have any recommendations for which ones you like best?

A. When it comes to selecting which protein supplement to take I would suggest going through the following steps to find what's best for you. Keep in mind there is something out there for everyone, and it usually takes some trial and error until you find the right one.

1. Get a referral. Ask a certified fitness/nutrition professional, such as a personal trainer, registered dietitian or nutritionist, on what brands they would recommend. This is a good starting point. They will help you make more of educated decision on your protein purchase.

2. How does it taste? If you have to hold your nose to suck it down then I would start looking for something else. Taste is a huge factor when it comes to staying with a protein powder. And please don't try to mask the taste by loading it up with a bunch of fruit and sugar. It just defeats the purpose on what you are trying to do by taking protein to begin with.

3. How does your body digest it? If you feel bloated, crampy or gassy...move on to another product. Your body is obviously telling you that it's having a hard time digesting it. Listen to your body on this. Believe me, it's not worth being uncomfortable.

4. All Natural vs Synthetic! The less ingredients, the better. Protein supplements can range from poor to high quality. Not all of them are the same. Make sure to read the label. I would suggest always going with the one that has fewer ingredients and are mostly all natural. Once you start getting into the synthetic (man-made) ingredients your body is going to have a harder time to breakdown the protein and process it. All Natural EVERY time.

One of my favorite protein powders that works best for me and is all natural is NutriWhey made by NutriForce Sports. I have personally gone through the steps above with several protein supplements and this is where I settled. It blends great with shakes, tastes great and digests really easy for me.
