Advice | Changing up workout routines

POSTED BY: Alex Isaly in BLOG

Q. What is some advice that you have for switching up your fitness routine in order to avoid having your body adapt to the workouts?

A. I am a big advocate for changing up your workout routines. Not only does is help with achieving your fitness goals, but it keeps your workouts interesting and helps with motivation when you hit a plateau. All it takes is small changes. Here are some examples that you can do to change up your workout regimen:

1. Resistance Training:

Incorporate drop sets (same exercise but reduce weight between sets with little to no recovery between sets) and super sets (2 exercises performed back to back training the same muscle. For example, 10 reps of dumb bell chest press, immediately followed by 10 reps of dumb bell flys. Or 10 reps of barbell bench press immediately followed by 10 reps of tricep dips.)

Change the type of exercises for each muscle group from week to week. For example, week 1 barbell bench press...week 2 incline dumb bell chest press.)

Incorporate body weight training into your 'equipment' training program

Incorporate compound exercises (2 exercises combined in one) into the workouts

2. Cardio Training:

Incorporate HIIT training into your low impact training program or visa versa

Incorporate short (15-20 minute) body weight exercises with little recovery between.

Even just incorporating a different type of workout into your training helps makes your program plateau-proof. For example, if all you do is resistance training add some yoga classes to your regimen. Or, add boxing/MMA training for cardio.

Whatever you decide, make sure you are keeping your training regimen always evolving. Don't get stagnant when you train. Your results and attitude will do the same.
