It’s awards season in Hollywood and that means celebrities stepping up their nutrition and workout game to look their absolute best on the red carpet. We’ve all seen celebrities looking impeccable and have often wondered exactly how they pull off that plunging Versace gown. We talked to one of Hollywood’s top trainers to get some insight into looking your best for the next major event in your life. Alex Isaly has not only consulted celebrities on how to look their best — he is also an elite athlete, master trainer, international fitness program developer/presenter, and nutrition expert. His background led to NBC bringing him on to serve as a Master Trainer for Radius, a first-of-its-kind, multiplatform fitness and wellness program. Isaly has also appeared on the TODAY Show, Hallmark’s Home and Family, The Talk, Jimmy Kimmel Live and CNN News as a fitness expert and been a regular contributor to SHAPE Magazine and Men’s Fitness.

So a few months before a red carpet appearance, what does Isaly recommend you start doing to make sure you look amazing?

Isaly says the most important thing to do first is take a look at diet.

“The one thing that I focus on more initially is the meal plan and the diet to see what they are currently doing and then incorporate a cleaner eating plan. I’ve typically seen clients get a much quicker response by changing up their diet.”

Isaly is a big fan of blood sugar stabilization, which involves eating every 3 to 4 hours and making sure each meal is balanced with protein, healthy fats (like olive oil), and complex carbs. You need all three nutrients to operate the right way. Isaly recommends things like chicken, fish, ground turkey, and egg whites, along with a complex carb like brown rice or a baked potato. 40 percent of meals protein 35 percent complex carb remaining 25 percent fats. Eat carbs in moderation, but you don’t need to eliminate them entirely. Carbs are the main fuel source for your body, so if you don’t want to pass out on the red carpet, have some good carbs. A no-carb diet is just getting rid of liquid, not burning fat.

“You can’t out-train a bad diet,” Isaly says. Once the eating plan is dialed in, incorporate a more regimented fitness plan such as a strength training and cardio combination at least two times a week. Strength training is imperative to getting results because it is forcing your body to keep your metabolism up. Combine exercises like squats with a shoulder press and burpees or lunges, with cardio three to four times a week for 30–40 minutes, making sure to increase your heart rate to the point where it is hard to carry on a conversation.

A week before your “red carpet appearance,” Isaly says you should cut out sugar and sodium entirely, drink at least a gallon of water a day, and sorry — no alcohol or carbonated drinks. This is also the time to cut back on carb intake and stay away from wheat and flour, which can make you puff up. Also increase the amount of cardio you are doing to 45–60 minutes a session.

But let’s say we have a slip-up during our pre-red carpet slim down (ex: we may have inhaled a burger and fries) before a big appearance.

“Don’t skip any meals,” Isaly says. “Stay on the three to four hour food cycle and don’t eat as much; just cut back on portion size, and from a fitness standpoint add some extra cardio to the training.”

And what about the day of your appearance? Still no salt, sugar, or alcohol, and keep portions in mind. “Try not to overindulge; you’ve made it this far,” Isaly says. “You’re at the finish line — stick with it.”

Now go out and flaunt your fabulous self on that “red carpet” — just don’t forget that double-sided tape for that Versace!
